The work helps the artists understand mindfulness, awareness and confidence. Participants should bring a notebook and pencil,  comfortable clothing as well as sneakers. No hard sole shoes.

Rodney Hicks is above all honored to be here with all of you at Rise Above Performing Arts. He is soon to be a resident of Denver Colorado with his husband and their two dogs after spending six wonderful years living in the Pacific Northwest. After being diagnosed with the neurological condition, Spasmodic Dysphonia, Hicks lost the use of his professional singing voice this past year. His 22 year career as a theatre performer came to a close in 2017 due to this condition. After careful consideration he has chosen to stay in theatre but focus on the other side of art creation. Writing, directing and collaborating on art for today. Rodney’s first play, NC-17. received an honorable mention by the American Playwriting Foundation Relentless Award in March of 2017. His new play brothers. a Tall Tale is a three character play about a family coming of age -told through the eyes of a 37 year old Black drag queen named Pearl. Along the lines of Hedwig… and How I learned to Drive. He is currently writing his third play, One Big Happy, a serio-comedy about seven childhood friend’s, now in their 40’s & 50’s, living and surviving in today’s America. As an actor Rodney was last seen on Broadway as part of the Original Cast of Come From Away where he originated the role of Bob & Others and can be heard on the Original Cast Recording. If you are in New York or Canada (soon to be a National tour) please do yourselves a favor and see this beautiful and life affirming show. It will always hold a very special place in my heart. Other Broadway credits include the Original cast of The Scottsboro Boys as Clarence Norris, the 2000 revival of Jesus Christ Superstar as Peter and both Original and Closing casts of the Landmark Musical RENT. Originating the roles of Paul and Others; Closing as Benjamin Coffin III. Rodney can be seen in that role in the RENT: Live on Broadway DVD or iTunes. Grateful for all of the regional theatre work where so much was learned and gained. Television credits include guest star roles on Leverage, GRIMM, Student Affairs (Pilot), Law and Order: Criminal Intent, NYPD Blue.
